Applicants must be currently registered as a dental assistant in the state of Tennessee. After completing this course, the participant will be able to explain how dental x-rays are created, have the ability to recognize the need for dental x-rays, explain how x-rays affect the human body, list the different sizes and parts of intraoral x-ray films, demonstrate the appropriate techniques for taking bitewing, periapical and panoramic x-rays, demonstrate the appropriate technique for exposing panoramic, bitewing and periapical radiographs and determine correct exposure and processing errors. Students will learn how to mount and label radiographs correctly.

 This course is designed to provide the knowledge needed to successfully monitor the use of nitrous oxidel oxygen analgesia in a private dental practice. The topics to be presented include a review and update on basic physiology, information on a patient evaluation for the use of nitrous oxide a discussion of the role of nitrous oxide in the dental practice a review of the new equipment and techniques, and knowledge of the indications and contraindications for using nitrous oxide. The students will learn a brief history of nitrous oxide oxygen and conscious sedation, the legal provisions for dental auxiliaries to monitor dental anatomy and physiology related to the human body and common drugs that react to nitrous oxide. The operation of equipment used as well as the safety features and infection control of equipment. Learn how to monitor patients under nitrous oxide. Recognition and management of medical emergencies associated with nitrous oxide.

This 8 week  course details the fundamentals of orthodontic assisting. The program strives to provide the universal fundamentals including oral and dental anatomy, tooth numbering, malocclusions, orthodontic instruments, intraoral auxiliaries, diagnostic records, application of appliances, appliance removal, retention, infection control.  Our courses are designed to combine classroom theory and practical “hands-on” training in a flexible, convenient environment.  Classes will be limited to twelve students per session to ensure personal attention and a positive learning experience. The course will be offered on Saturday morning from 8:30AM to 12:30PM. 

 Program Objectives

1.  Develop a comprehensive understanding of oral and dental anatomy.


2. Know the language of orthodontics and be able to confidently speak utilizing clinical terminology.


3. Be able to communicate with patients and parents and explain treatment procedures and goals.


4. Develop a thorough comprehension of the steps involved in common orthodontic procedures.


5. Understand the various stages of orthodontic treatment, beginning with records and continuing through retention.

6. Principles and mechanics of the straight-wire bracket

7. Understanding proper bracket placement and the principles of movement

8. Direct bond bracketing of anatomical teeth – Hands On

9. Placement of separators, sizing and cementing molar bands, bracket placement aids, cements and materials, patient management, post operative procedures

10. Archwire Sequence

11. Understanding skeletal and dental classifications and discrepancies

12. Wax bite registration and archwire coordination
